Fall Cleanup in Thunder Bay: What Actually Matters Before Snow

Thunder Bay's growing season is short, and the window to get fall cleanup right is even shorter. We're usually looking at snow on the ground by early to mid November, sometimes sooner, and a lot of what people put off until "next weekend" ends up frozen solid or buried instead. Here's what actually matters, in order, and what you can skip.

The final cut matters more than people think

Your last mow of the season should bring the grass down shorter than your normal summer height, closer to two inches. Grass left long under snow all winter mats down and traps moisture against the crown, which is exactly what invites snow mold in the spring. Grass cut too short going into winter stresses the roots with less energy stored up. Two inches is the sweet spot for our climate. Timing-wise, that final cut usually lands in October here, once growth has clearly slowed but before the ground freezes.

Leaves: don't let them sit

A thin scatter of leaves that gets mulched into the lawn on a final pass is fine, even helpful. A thick, wet mat of leaves left sitting for weeks is not. It blocks light and airflow to the grass underneath, and by the time it's exposed again in spring, you're often looking at dead patches that need reseeding. If leaves are piling up faster than they're breaking down, get them off the lawn before the first heavy snow locks them in place.

Fall fertilizing is worth doing, aeration is optional

A fall feeding is one of the highest-value things you can do for a Thunder Bay lawn all year. The grass isn't putting energy into top growth anymore, it's building root reserves for winter and next spring's green-up, and fall fertilizer feeds exactly that. Aeration is a nice-to-have on top of it if the soil is compacted, but it's not essential every single fall the way feeding is. Gutters and downspouts, while you're at it

What you can actually skip

• Winterizing sprinkler lines yourself if you don't have an irrigation system: not every Thunder Bay yard has one, don't worry about it if you don't.
